He's Already There

This whole week I have been glued to the tv just like an infomercial junkie on a binge. The death of the Pope had me watching all the news and specials about the Pope. I guess it is just something about spinning rotisseries, indestructible knives, non-stick cookware and the death of someone famous to get peopled hooked. And while I was watching these broadcasts - I heard several people interviewed say they were so sad and how they will be praying for him. So it got me thinking for a bit. I said to myself, "If there is one person who didn’t need our prayers – it would be the Pope”. He got his one-way ticket to the Pearly Gates reserved a long time ago and has no doubt already arrived. Besides - if he were to truly need our prayers, than we are all in some serious trouble my friends. So instead, I think you should be praying for me – because I may be going straight to hell for these comments.

Bob, so the Pope can't go to purgatory? He was a man wasn't he? I'm not Catholic and I have heard you talk about going to purgatory so... did you make a reservation? I think you have been eating out in New York City too long!

first of all Bob-O you will not go to hell for your comments. second this is a good opportunity to share the truth of the gospel and in the process hope to bless others along the way.

I am, soooo MUCH, enjoying the New Testament Theology class i'm taking! The book is titled just that New Testament Theology by Leon Morris - it is a must read! Anyway, I said that to say we studied about the sinful nature of humans. So yes even though he was the Pope he had a sin nature just like the rest of us that is a daily struggle for all! Honestly, the closer your walk with God the more prayer is needed as it relates to sin opportunity and in temptation. Also, some were praying for him to have comfort and peace and that the Lord would bring him to his eternal home in Heaven. So, yes the Pope did need prayer just like the rest of us and more because of the great responsiblity for beening Shepard to millions. Now allow me to share some text from Morris' book please.

Sin:

Sin is not only an evil we commit, but a power that holds us in bondage. We are "slaves of sin" (Rom 6:17, 20) We are "sold under sin" (Rom 7:14). Just as a slave is sold to a master. Paul is saying two things: (1) sin has no right to control us (made in God's image as we are) and (2) it has nevertheless taken control. "...our conduct shows we know right from wrong" (Rom 2:15). Therefore, when we sin we are "without excuse" (Rom 1:12). "All sinned, and have come short of the glory of God" (Rom 3:23).

His point was that we all commit sin. Not only so, but we cannot break free. We are caught up in the power and the consequences of the evil we do. We are enslaved.

The Flesh:

Strictly it denotes the soft part of the physical human body as in the expression "flesh and blood" (1 Cor 15:50). "Flesh" readily comes to signify that which is connected with life in the body, but which is opposed to the things of God. It is plain that from the human standpoint "flesh" can be attractive and highly respectable as well as gross and highly sensual. But wherever people concentrate on the purely human and on promoting the interests of this life only, there is sin. Paul is clear that the flesly minded face ultimate disaster. He goes on to say that Christians are those who "do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit". Christians have been liberated form bondage to "the flesh", but this took place because of Christ's saving work (meaning Jesus died for our sins). To be free of the flesh is not a natural achievement.

So, I say it is through prayer and direct intentions that we are able to overcome sin through Christ Jesus our Lord. Prayer is the key that unlocks that door of opporunity - the bible says the only way to the God teh Father is through His Son Jesus (Jesus is even interceeding for us right now). When we pray for others this is known as Intercession - praying for others (we must remember nto everyone know how to pray for themselves and it is our responsiblity to pray for them until they come into the knowledge of Jesus Christ). We are commanded to pray for one another and 2 Tim. tells us we are to pray for those in authority/leadership because this makes God completely happy that we may all live and worship Him in peace.

I hope this was a blessing to many!
